Hidden in plain sight, in the cracks beneath our feet, the nooks and crevices of our decaying structures and useless barriers, a covert army of hardy and adaptable plants and animals fight daily for the right to simply be.
The city is man's best attempt to confine the world to the singular and narrow illusion of his dead, hardened ego, yet the intrepid plants and flowers that creep into our parks, streets, yards and liminal spaces testify that earth and the life within it will not be controlled or tamed.
Perhaps not all urban animals are as brave and brazen as the feisty rats and pigeons of New York City, but even the most gentle city creatures lead lives of clever tenacity and quiet defiance, a reminder to humanity that all life is connected; that man is only one animal among millions, a single strand of a giant web on which everything depends for survival.
The images on this page honor the plants and animals that inhabit the city, to remind us that in even the most hostile environments, life breaks through in all its beauty.
The images here were primarly captured in and around Atlanta, but also New York City; Washington, D.C., Tampa, Florida; and Greensboro, North Carolina.
